The shaft is made of stainless steel and the EzyLock nut of composite material to resist rust. The EzyLock system ensures that the grindstone is held securely with no danger of unwinding while also requiring no tools to mount or loosen the grindstone. A special pitch on the left hand thread causes the rotation of the wheel to tighten the nut to the correct torque.
This construction makes it easy to work quickly work with and swap different grindstones onto the machine, for example the 4000 Grit Japanese Waterstone which provides an extra fine finish.

When mounting the grindstone, turn the Ezylock nut anticlockwise into position by hand but do not overtighten. When turning the machine on it will automatically tighten to the right torque.
When changing stone, turn the grindstone clockwise while holding the leather honing wheel in position with the other hand and the EzyLock system will release allowing you to remove the nut and stone.
